Plan Adherence

Plan adherence is the operational form of discipline. Most traders have rules (entry criteria, position sizing, exit logic, risk caps). What separates profitable discretionary traders from break-even ones is rarely the quality of the rules and usually the consistency of following them. Plan adherence is the metric that captures the gap.

The trick to measuring it is making the rules explicit enough to score against. A vague rule like 'don't overtrade' cannot be checked. A specific rule like 'no more than four trades per session' or 'no re-entry within 10 minutes of a loss' can. Each session, each rule produces a yes or no answer, and the percentage across rules and sessions is the trader's plan-adherence score.

Plan adherence is the single most useful number a discretionary trader can track because it has a tight causal link with results, it is measurable from trade data plus the trader's own daily self-report, and it points directly at what to fix. A trader who adheres at 60 percent can usually move to 80 by addressing the one rule they break most often, and the dollar improvement is typically immediate.
